Claiming Kim Kardashian’s Marilyn Monroe Dress ‘Significantly Damaged’

Kim Kardashian “significantly damaged” Marilyn Monroe’s dress, collector claims

The 41-year-old reality star made an appearance at the 2022 Met Gala in May wearing the iconic number – which was worn by the Hollywood legend in 1962 when she sang Happy Birthday to then-President John F. Kennedy – but collector Scott Fortner has now criticized Ripley’s Believe it Or Not’s decision to lend it to him as “irresponsible”.

He said, “I feel like it’s [was] irresponsible, it’s not just a dress. He’s a cultural icon. He’s a political icon. He’s a Hollywood icon. This is part of the American history of an event that happened 60 years ago and… it should have been archived, preserved and taken care of. I think the disappointment I feel is that Ripley made several statements that they were doing everything they could to protect and preserve the dress.”

The collector – who is the curator of the “world’s largest private collection of personal and archival Monroe possessions” had shown his Instagram followers that the gold glitter number was “missing crystals” with some “left hanging by a thread” and claimed it was now “unrepairable” as the fabric is no longer available.

Alongside the post, he added, “So much to keep the integrity of the dress and conservation. Was it worth it?”

“Without a doubt, the damage is significant!”

However, Fortner was keen to point out that he wasn’t trying to attack the Kardashian star with his comments, but simply reminded his followers that it was the “most famous” dress in the world.

He said: “I think a lot of people are really, really hard on Kim Kardashian and this is not my attempt here. This is the most famous dress in the world.”

In order to preserve the dress, attraction Ripley’s – which bought the historic garment in 2016 for $4.8 million – claimed “great care” had been taken, with Kim only wearing the dress for a few minutes before turning into a replica. .

In a statement, Ripley’s Believe It Or Not! said: “Great care has been taken to preserve this piece of pop culture history. It was not an easy decision for Ripley’s, however, Kim Kardashian continued to show the utmost respect for this opportunity. and this historical garment.”
