David James has claimed he is ‘not a fan’ of the players on loan as he referred to Philippe Coutinho at Aston Villa, as he told The Football Show on Sky Sports.
Will Aston Villa sign Coutinho permanently from Barcelona?
Well, it looks like Coutinho will wear Villa colors for the long term and will be part of Steven Gerrard’s European pursuit next season.
It has been claimed that Villa are close to signing the former Liverpool man from Barcelona for £17million – beating Newcastle United to his signature.
Either way, it’s a serious statement of intent from Midlands, who will be pushing for a top-six finish next season.
Ex-England goalkeeper James certainly believes Coutinho can ‘create a positive impact’ for Villa if he is at the club next season.
“I’m not a fan of players on loan because you always wonder what their motive is,” James said. “You also wonder, based on their success, what are you doing to replace them.
“Stevie talked about keeping Coutinho for next season – if he can be fit, from the games I’ve seen, in the 60th minute, all of a sudden his fitness isn’t at the level you want it to be.
“Some of the assists and goals have been outstanding. He was part of the reason Villa were looking to challenge those lower European places.
“Get a good pre-season under your belt, so Stevie G has a positive player who can create a positive impact for Aston Villa next season.
Villa need to sign Coutinho as he improves their chances of finishing in the top six next season.
Added to a pre-season, in addition to further improving their physical condition, this Midlands team could finally reach their level.
Villa’s start to the season was chaotic, with the departure of Jack Grealish and then the dismissal of Dean Smith.
But, over the past few months, Gerrard would have taken the opportunity to see what he likes and what he doesn’t like.
