Expert ‘sure’ of Conor Gallagher exit amid ‘£30m’ claim

Noel Whelan has insisted midfield ace Conor Gallagher will get his chance to impress at Chelsea during pre-season.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insidersuggested the 22-year-old would be hit with a “£30million” fee if “things don’t work out” for him at Stamford Bridge.

Gallagher’s successful loan deal at Crystal Palace is set to expire at the end of the season.

The midfielder has eight goals and three assists in 27 Premier League appearances at Selhurst Park – and was named in Gareth Southgate’s last two England squads.

According to the Mirror (April 18), Palace chairman Steve Parish has opened the door to extending Gallagher’s stay at the club this summer.

Whelan insisted that Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel will give the midfielder a chance to prove his worth during pre-season.

He said Football Insiderby Ewan Kingsbury: “Gallagher certainly isn’t hurting himself, is he?”

“He performs brilliantly at Crystal Palace and really invests himself.

“It will be hard to miss a player like that for Thomas Tuchel. You just can’t close your eyes when he puts on performances like that.

“I’m sure he’ll be rewarded one way or another at Chelsea – and I’m sure he’ll get the chance to show his worth in pre-season.

“And if things don’t work out – then Chelsea still won £30m. Either way, it’s a win.

The Gallagher’s Palace loan is his fourth successful spell away from Chelsea.

The midfield star has also impressed during temporary moves to West Brom, Swansea and Charlton.
