Barnsley have opted to bolster their squad during the summer transfer window by securing the services of a host of new faces.

One of the people who sealed a temporary move to Oakwell was Tom Edwards, who signed a season-long loan deal with Stoke City.

Since making that particular switch, Edwards has featured five times for the Reds in League One.

The 23-year-old’s last appearance came in the club’s clash with Morecambe on Saturday.

Edwards was unable to help his side claim a clean sheet in this game as Barnsley suffered a disappointing defeat at the hands of the Shrimps.

Kieran Phillips scored what turned out to be the game-winning first-half goal for Morecambe as he headed home from close range.

Barnsley will be looking to make a positive response to that loss to Lincoln City tomorrow night.

Prior to this match, FLW’s Barnsley fan Joe Beardsall admitted that while he is not against the club signing Edwards on a permanent deal, he believes the defender still needs to show more quality at this level.

Speaking to FLW, Beardsall said: “I rate Tom Edwards, I think he’s a good player, I think he stays stuck, defensively, I really like him.

“He struggled a bit against Charlton in the first 20 minutes, one of their wingers was very quick but he still held on and he managed to get back into position in the few times he did. got beat and he worked really hard to make sure he could defend as well as possible in this game.

“Since then he has gotten stronger and stronger and has continued to play well, I like his tackling style, I think he stays stuck and he looks tough.

“One thing I would say is that he doesn’t advance enough for me, maybe he needs to try to be a bit more attacking in terms of play when he advances.

“There were a few times against Bolton where I liked to see him make a run.

“He tried once but he was fouled, but yeah, doing it a bit more often and maybe focusing a bit more on his quality going forward would be the next step for Edwards for me.

“At the moment I can’t say 100 per cent if it would be a good idea to sign him permanently, I would probably say that’s definitely what is happening.

“I think he still has a bit more to do to prove to us 100 per cent that he can be consistent in the Barnsley team and there is still a long way to go, there are only 13 games left in the squad. season, so we’re still only seeing glimpses of these new players.

“But I think it’s been a promising start and I’d be open to us signing him on a permanent deal if he continues to play well.”

The verdict

It will be interesting to see if Edwards are able to kick off Barnsley in the coming months after appearing in their last three league games.

While the full-back has shown signs of promise, he currently only has an average WhoScored Match Rating of 6.36 in Ligue 1 which is a disappointing figure.

By working on his consistency, Edwards could possibly improve as a player under Barnsley head coach Michael Duff, who will aim to oversee a push for a top six finish through the remainder of the 2022/23 season. .

With Edwards’ contract at Stoke set to run until the summer of 2024, Barnsley will need to spend a reasonable amount of money to secure his services permanently when his loan deal expires.
