For months Daizen Maeda has been a name that has toured fans as the J1 League player Celtic are expected to act for in January. It’s not hard to see why given the form he showed and the fact that Angel Postecoglou would know him very well from their time together in Yokohama F. Marinos. And now it looks like the Hoops may be looking to take the plunge.
As reported by The Times, Celtic is confident to sign Maeda in the January transfer window and well-positioned sources in Japan expect a deal to be struck as well.
Of course, nothing is finished yet and until that is the case there will be doubts as to whether the move will end up happening. Also, how will Maeda do at Celtic? His first visit to Europe, on loan with Maritimo, was not spectacular.
But as Celts Are Here reports, reporter Dan Orlowitz said:
“Obviously, his first trip to Europe didn’t quite work out [On loan to Maritimo] but he’s another “not if but when” player. Not at all surprised that Angel is going for him, he will do very well.
He also said:
“If you asked us of everyone following the J.League which Angel’s shopping list would include – and a lot of people did – Maeda would have been in everyone’s top 3 with Furuhashi.”
When asked if Kyogo and Maeda could play on the same team, he replied:
“Oh absolutely, Angel is going to sync them.”
Maeda can be a very exciting signing for Celtic
Of course, it remains to be seen if the move will eventually happen, but it’s safe to say that if it does, Maeda would be a very exciting signing for Celtic.
Possessing incredible pace, good movement and the ability to finish with both feet, it’s not hard to see why Postecoglou might want to reunite with Yokohama star F. Marinos.
At this point, he leads the League J1 scorers chart and is capable of playing as a left winger, second forward or even a center forward if the situation calls for it.
Postecoglou still had to look to Japan in January with the J1 League season ending at that time. And it looks like Maeda is one of the players in his sights.
