An article in Spanish newspaper Marca claims Chelsea are considering sacking midfielder Saul Niguez to Atletico Madrid in January. The Spain international struggled to shine under Thomas Tuchel in west London. Liverpool fans responded on Twitter, wanting their club to catch him.
Chelsea would have pulled it off on the summer deadline day – at least that’s what we saw. The Atletico Madrid midfielder has been loaned to Stamford Bridge for £ 4.5million, with a permanent clause included, worth £ 40million – according to reports. A total of £ 44.5million, then.
It was seen as a coup considering that Niguez, who is only 26, has already recorded 343 huge appearances for Atletico Madrid under Diego Simeone. He has scored 43 goals during that span, making 20 assists. During that time, he won two Europa League titles and of course, last season’s La Liga.
Thus, a move to Chelsea was considered a bit of genius by Chelsea. Mundo Deportivo reported this summer that Liverpool were watching Niguez, but a decision never materialized. The Reds lost Gini Wijnaldum in a free transfer this summer, with Niguez reportedly being considered as a replacement.
However, he ended up at Chelsea. But things didn’t go according to Niguez’s plan – handling just five appearances. Only 47 minutes of action have passed in the Premier League – over two replacement outings. A new report from Marca indicates Chelsea could cancel their loan in January.
The Blues are considering canceling his loan – with the player hanging on at halftime on his debut against Aston Villa. But Atletico say there is no clause in the loan deal that will allow Niguez to return alongside Diego Simeone. Liverpool, meanwhile, need a midfielder to replace Wijnaldum.
Liverpool fans on Niguez: Reds should wait until summer
Not only have Liverpool lost Wijnaldum, but things are getting worse. Harvey Elliott is expected to be out until the New Year, suffering from an ankle dislocation against Leeds. Naby Keita is now injured, and upon his return he will fly to represent Guinea at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Xherdan Shaqiri moved to new pastures in Lyon. These midfield issues have made it clear that Liverpool need to sign a midfielder – but for Niguez, Liverpool won’t be able to get it until the summer. This is because Niguez has already played for two clubs this season – Chelsea and Atletico.
As reported, Marca said Atletico were confident there was no clause in his loan that would allow him to leave. While Liverpool might need a midfielder in January, they might be better off waiting until summer if they think Niguez is the man to sign. Indeed, Niguez may have to wait until summer anyway.
Liverpool fans would love Niguez – even if they couldn’t sign him in January. Could they hear it better than Chelsea? Jurgen Klopp is used to doing this.
