During his time at Celtic, it seemed like Patrick Roberts was destined to be a superstar. But since then it has come to be one of the stories of ‘what could have been’ in football. For years he was at Manchester City but never managed to make his mark in their first team, only featuring for them a few times. And after his loan spell at Parkhead ended, he was never able to make his mark elsewhere.
Roberts spent time on loan at several clubs, in England and abroad. But aside from Celtic, he has never scored more than once for another team at senior level so far.
Roberts’ long but unsuccessful time at Manchester City would come to an end in January this year, as he completed his move to League One side Sunderland.
And while speaking with the Sunderland Echo, he admitted his best football came at Celtic:
“My best football came when I was playing in front of 60,000 fans in Scotland. I come here and there are 30,000 fans at the Stadium of Light and it’s the same kind of feeling, just obviously a different league.
But at the same time, he also thinks he’s a better player now than he was during his time at Celtic:
“I would say I’m probably even better. Obviously I’m older now, when I was younger I was maybe a little more lively.
“With the run I’ve had in the team at the moment, I’m just getting to my best football and I can only get better.”
Roberts makes an interesting statement about Celtic and his move to Parkhead
During some spells at Celtic, Roberts was absolutely brilliant and he felt like he was destined to become a footballing superstar.
Many may have forgotten him, but when he joined Celtic he was just a teenager. And even now he is only 25 years old.
Thus, Roberts has plenty of time to turn his career around if he can get back to his best form. But there may not be many opportunities left at the top level, as he’s been at a string of clubs without ever really making an impact.
So, the former Celtic star has to make his chance at Sunderland count. We can only wish him good luck.
