Arteta gives news on Arsenal squad ahead of Everton clash

Portugal midfielder Renato Sanches has given Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta the go-ahead to make him an offer in the January transfer window.

Sanches was one of the most exciting young talents in world football six years ago, but after breaking onto the Benfica stage he fell short of Bayern Munich’s expectations.

Ligue 1 team Lille threw him a lifeline in 2019 by signing the playmaker, and after getting his career back on track, Sanches is garnering a lot of interest from some of Europe’s top clubs.

And although he is under contract at Lille until 2023, the 24-year-old has signaled that he is ready to listen to the offers.

Speaking to L’Equipe, via Get French Football News, Sanches said: “Milan and Arsenal may be interested, I spoke with my agent but I can’t say more. I just know I am ready, if the offer arrives, i will evaluate it.

“Milan is a great club – historic, classy. I really like them.

The Gunners have changed their season thanks to their new signings.

They couldn’t have started the campaign worse after suffering losses in their opening three games, which left them at the bottom of the table.

But as the injury list grew shorter and players started to freeze, Arteta managed to lead his side to seventh, four points off the Champions League table but with one game less.

The arrivals of Aaron Ramsdale, Benjamin White and Takehiro Tomiyasu have all played a key role since arriving at Emirates Stadium, with Nuno Tavares, Albert Sambi Lokonga and Martin Odegaard as well.

And if Sanches returns to the Premier League, having had an unsuccessful loan to Swansea City in 2017, then the EURO 2016 winner will be hoping he can have a solid impact on the squad.

One of the 2016 Golden Boy’s key tasks will be to make the most of midfielder Thomas Partey, who has suffered injuries since joining the Gunners from Atletico Madrid in 2020 for £ 45million.

Arteta asked for more from the Ghanaian midfielder ahead of Arsenal’s clash with Everton on Monday night.

He said: “Thomas is a very important player in the squad and he has obviously been missed for long periods since he joined and it’s not ideal but our energy is just to get the best of him and how we’re going to do it.

“The fact that he had so many injuries didn’t really help him as he didn’t find the platform physically at its best first and then he had games where he was more consistent than in other. We need him at his best and he can produce more. He knows we must demand more.

It remains to be seen whether Arteta makes an offer for Sanches and, if so, whether the Portugal international is keen to right the wrongs of his previous stay in England and prove that he is still a prospect to be excited about.
