Gabby Agbonlahor told TalkSPORT he believes Newcastle will struggle to attract players because of City – and Jamie Reuben has responded.
Newcastle’s new owners face the challenge of attracting players to the club to help them avoid relegation. But with the club in the 20th, it will be difficult.
However, the wealth of the club’s new owners certainly helps the club attract players. A few wins by then would help too.
Agbonlahor told TalkSPORT – according to the Chronicle – that it may not just be the club’s position in the league that sees them struggling to attract players.
“When I was playing in the Premier League Newcastle was where you weren’t sure. I didn’t want to go, it’s far north, the weather.
“The players want to be close to London. If you offered a player £ 40,000 a week at Newcastle, or £ 30,000 a week at Brentford, he would go to Brentford.
The Reuben brothers have a 10% stake in Newcastle and Jamie is on the board. He responded, with a Tweet that will have thrilled Toon fans.
Reuben responds: Is Agbonlahor’s claim about Newcastle true?
Newcastle is a brilliant city with a lot to offer. Not only that, but it’s a massive football club, with a big stadium – and now, a financial incentive.
It’s exciting to be a Newcastle fan. They can afford any player in the world. The Tyneside region will not be the problem in January.
The problem is going to be to be able to bring players to the club due to the threat of relegation. But this can be solved with loan agreements.
The tastes of Philippe Coutinho and other big names have been linked. They won’t want to join, then will be relegated six months later.
But Coutinho would surely want to be involved in a loan deal – and then potentially sign permanently with Premier League status secured.
