Sligo Rovers pair Aidan Keena and Emma Doherty have been honored for their fine individual performances with player of the month awards.
Keena was named the SSE Airtricity/Soccer Writers’ Ireland Player of the Month for July while Doherty won the SSE Airtricity WNL Player of the Month for June/July 2022.
Striker Keena netted a brace against Shelbourne and went on to score crucial goals at Bala Town and Motherwell as Bit O’Red progressed to the Europa Conference League third qualifying round.
This is the second time Keena, 23, has won the award, having already won it in March.
Doherty, playing in his first season, scored twice in the 3-2 win over champions Shelbourne and the Donegal native already has nine league goals to his name this season. She also played a crucial role in helping Sligo qualify for the semi-finals of the EVOKE.ie FAI Women’s Cup.
“It’s great to win the Player of the Month award again,” Keena said of his award, along with St Patrick’s Athletic goalkeeper Joseph Anang – whose loan spell with the Saints has since ended – Voting runner-up and Shamrock Rovers striker Rory Gaffney third.
“If your team is doing well, you will always have chances as a striker. We have reached good form, and I had a few chances and put them aside, thank God.
“In any season your goal is to be there for the top scorer. Hopefully at the end I will still be there.”
“I was thrilled to be nominated, let alone win it, because the league is full of internationals and great experienced players. It’s a huge achievement for me,” 18-year-old Doherty said of her own price.
